Potato cyst nematodes (PCN), Globodera rostochiensis and G. pallida are among the emerging pests that are likely to threaten future of potato production in Africa. G. rostochiensis pathtype Ro 1/4 have been reported in many African countries while G. pallida Pa 2/3 is less widespread. Increasing reports of the pest over the past few decades in the continent triggered research, development and implementation of alternative PCN management strategies. This study reviewed the various PCN management strategies that have been researched and recommended under African potato growing conditions including implementation of quarantine procedures, the use of host resistance, trap crops, solarization, chemical nematicides and integrated pest management. This study provided basis for choosing the appropriate PCN control methods and identified the challenges hindering PCN management as well as providing recommendations for future research.
