The Northwest Potato Variety Development (ID, OR, WA) has identified two promising russet clones, OR12133-10 and AOR07781-5 for release as new varieties this year. OR12133-10 is a late maturing, long russet potato suitable for processing with resistance to foliar early and late blight, and moderate resistance to tuber late blight. Total yield is higher than to Russet Burbank, Clearwater Russet and Ranger Russet, and exhibits higher yield of US No 1’s (82%), with high nutritional, culinary and processing merit. Shatter bruise, and net necrosis/vascular discoloration can be an issue. AOR07781-5 is also a long heavy russeted, cream flesh potato mostly suited for processing but may exhibit an acceptable fresh market appearance in certain production regions. AOR07781-5 has a nice typy appearance, good russeting, and high post-harvest merit with high yield potential, and cold sweetening resistance with low acrylamide forming potential. It has resistance to PVY, zebra chip, fusarium dry rot, and tolerance to common scab. It is susceptible to early die and late blight, and hollow heart can be an issue. Both these breeding clones have potential for success in the processing industry.
